Atlantis-Paradise Island Names Karawan President & Managing Director

by James Shillinglaw  August 31, 2016

Brookfield Asset Management, the holding company that owns Atlantis-Paradise Island, has appointed Howard Karawan as president and managing director. He succeeds Paul Burke, who recently resigned to pursue other interests in the United States.  Karawan will begin in his new post on Sept. 19.

Karawan is making a return to Atlantis after serving as chief operating officer and chief restructuring officer for Fontainebleau Resorts, where he oversaw financial, operations and marketing for the relaunch of the Fontainebleau Miami Beach. He previous served as president and chief marketing officer for Kerzner International, the prior owner and operator of Atlantis.

During his previous tenure with Atlantis, he was part of the senior leadership team that developed and managed the resort and spearheaded the creation and launch of the One&Only Resorts brand.

In his new role, Karawan will lead Atlantis’ business development and overall strategic direction and growth. He also will oversee the leadership and integration of the overall guest and employee experience, while managing the day-to-day operations of the resort.

Atlantis, an ocean-themed destination resort located on Paradise Island in The Bahamas, features a wide variety of accommodations built around a 141-acre waterscape comprised of more than 20 million gallons of fresh and saltwater lagoons, pools and habitats. It is home to the largest open-air marine habitat in the world, with over 50,000 marine animals in lagoons and displays.

Atlantis also features Aquaventure, a water experience consisting of water slides and a mile-long river ride with high intensity rapids. Dolphin Cay, the resort’s interactive and education dolphin center, was created with the goal of enlightening visitors about the wonders of these remarkable ocean inhabitants.
