Planet Hollywood Resorts plans to bring its third all-inclusive branded property in the Caribbean to St. Maarten, through its partnership with Canadian Sunwing Travel Group.

It will join properties in Costa Rica, opening later this fall; and Cancun, which debuts in the spring of 2019.

On the Dutch side of the island, the 450-room resort will be developed on the beachfront of Great Bay. Formerly the site of the Sonesta Great Bay Beach Resort, which closed due to extensive damage from Hurricane Irma.

A signature of the brand, which first launched in the 1990s, Hollywood memorabilia will be on display throughout the property. It will also offer a 16,000-square-foot casino and Guy Fieri-branded eatery.

Guests can upgrade to “Star Class” to get added amenities, backstage access to exclusive facilities like the Green Room Lounge and a private beach club, and discounts on resort facilities.

Construction is set to begin soon, according to a statement from St. Maarten’s Ministry of Tourism. At one of the hardest hit islands in the Caribbean, along with French-side St. Martin, this is welcome news for getting the tourism sector back on track.

Minister of Tourism and Economic Affairs Stuart Johnson said Sunwing’s investment is “a significant boost” in returning St. Maarten to the number-one vacation spot in the Caribbean.

Sunwing will also resume its year-round, weekly nonstop flights from both Montreal and Toronto to St. Maarten, with service slated to begin on Feb. 28, 2019.
