Travelers Return to Los Cabos Despite Travel Warning

by Richard D'Ambrosio  November 22, 2017

Hotel occupancy rebounded by 21 percentage points in Los Cabos in October versus September, according to the Los Cabos Tourism Board and the Hotel Association of Los Cabos, indicating the impact from a U.S. travel warning has had limited effect on travelers’ desires to visit the resort region.

Hotel occupancy in Los Cabos rose to 61 percent in the month, after dipping to a low of 40 percent in September. The U.S. State department issued a warning in late August stating that local violence could threaten the lives of American tourists.

Visitor arrivals were up 8.8 percent in October, to 172,300 for the month following a 2 percent dip in September, the first decline in three years. The region expects visitor arrivals to be up about 5 percent this year overall.

“With repeat guests accounting for 70 percent of our visitors, Los Cabos’ resilience is in the destination’s DNA, and this new data illustrates that Los Cabos is still on the rise,” said Rodrigo Esponda, Managing Director of Los Cabos Tourism Board. “Our strategic growth in hotels, arrivals and occupancy has created a very favorable environment for both tourists and investors who are attracted to the destination’s diverse and distinct experiences and are also confident in the destination’s long-term potential as a premier destination of choice.”

Los Cabos has added more than 2,800 hotel rooms, a 25 percent growth, the last 12 months through October 2016, and expects to add another 4,900 rooms by 2021.
