TMR Unplugged: Real Talk…. With Riverside Luxury Cruises’ Karolina
This week, we’re checking in with Riverside Luxury Cruises’ Guest Experience Manager Karolina Bolek. Take a breather and see what makes her love her life in travel. Originally from Poland, Karolina grew up in Spain and now lives on a European river cruise ship—so, in a way, home is everywhere, and she considers that a real privilege.
What inspired you to work in the travel industry?
I love experiencing the magic of travel alongside guests as they make some of their happiest memories.
What is your favorite travel-related book or movie?
“Eat, Pray, Love” — it captures how travel can change your perspective and open your heart.
What’s a hidden gem or underrated experience you recommend to visitors?
Early-morning walks on the sun deck while sailing — it’s peaceful, beautiful, and very underrated.
What is your favorite destination?
The Lower Danube is my favorite region — authentic & untouched. Asking me to choose one port out of the 70 we sail to on the Debussy? Impossible — each one has something special that makes it unforgettable.
What part of your job makes you smile the most?
I love watching our team creating memories with our guests — when everyone’s enjoying themselves, it’s the best part of the job.
What was your proudest guest interaction experience?
A guest once lost a piece of jewelry during an excursion. My team and I asked our pastry chef to create chocolates shaped like it as a little surprise — her reaction was unforgettable.
What’s your dream travel destination, and why?
South Africa – It feels undiscovered to me.
Tell us something about yourself that most people don’t know!
I love chocolate — though I don’t think I could ever keep it a secret, so everyone knows!
How do you make travel special for your guests?
I try to make every journey meaningful by being present with our guests, listening to them observing the small details, and tailoring experiences to what matters most to them.
What was your most memorable group, and why?
A family from Mexico spending Christmas onboard. With relatives spread across Europe, Mexico, and the US, it was amazing to see them reconnect, play games, and share laughter together and including us in their experience.
What is your favorite amenity?
Our sun deck loungers — the perfect spot for quiet reflection while sailing past breathtaking views.
How do you handle difficult or unexpected situations with travelers?
By staying calm, listening, and focusing on solutions — empathy always wins. And remember not to take things personally 😉
What’s a small thing travelers can do that makes your job easier?
Being clear about what you enjoy or need helps us create a better experience for you — it makes our job so much easier.
What’s a common mistake that travelers make, and how can they avoid it?
Over-scheduling themselves – I remind our Guests to embrace the experiences they enjoy most and go at a pace that feels right for them.
How do you keep things fun and engaging for travelers?
I mix humor, local stories, and a personal touch — it turns information into connection. Just being myself.
What’s your favorite part of the ship to spend time on when you’re not working?
The wheelhouse – the Captains always have a story to share and a highlight to point out.
How has working in the travel industry changed your perspective on the world?
It’s taught me that every person’s story is unique, and small gestures create lasting memories. It’s also made me appreciate hospitality and notice the little details that make an experience special.
