A new study finds that three in five Canadians plan to travel this summer.

This week, Allianz Global Assistance (Allianz), a travel insurance provider, released the results of its first annual Summer Vacation Confidence Study, which focused on travellers’ feelings toward, and plans for, travel in summer 2024.

According to the report, 61% of Canadians are taking a trip this summer, and 30% are planning to travel more than once. Nearly three-quarters of Canadians (72%) responded that summer vacations are important to them.

“Canadians are typically known to escape the winter, but with 72% saying summer vacations are important to them, we may be seeing a shift to more consistent travel year-round,” said Dan Keon, vice president of marketing & insights at Allianz.

“Post-pandemic, there has been a rapid recovery in the Canadian consumer’s mindset around the importance and prioritization of travel. Our Summer Vacation Confidence Study suggests this trend is continuing, with 30% of Canadians planning to take more than one trip this summer. We consider this segment to be ‘hyper travelers.’”

Unsurprisingly, individuals 18 to 34 and families with children rank the highest for summer travel intentions (72% and 73% respectively).

The study also looked at vacation budgets. The average family looks to spend approximately $2,728 on a summer trip, while families with children are budgeting $3,519 for summer travel on average.

“Canadian travellers plan to make a significant investment in their summer vacations this year,” noted Keon.

For the study, Allianz partnered with Ipsos and surveyed 2,000 Canadian adults in April 2024.
