A group of climate activities caused dozens of flight cancellations at Germany’s Munich Airport (MUC) on Saturday after they breached airport grounds and glued themselves to one of its runways.
According to Reuters, German police arrested eight activists in total on Saturday after the group caused a delay of nearly two hours for both arrivals and departures. The activists from a climate group called Last Generation first arrived on the airport’s runway before 5 a.m. local time and, in total, caused 60 flights to be canceled.
The group posted photos of the protest on social media, writing that the German government should be responsible for curbing the airline industry’s climate impact, rather than waiting for consumers to do it themselves.
Nancy Faeser, Germany’s federal minister of the interior, wrote on social media that the protest endangers “air traffic and harm climate protection because they only provoke incomprehension and anger.”
“It is good that the federal police took action quickly. The perpetrators must be consistently pursued and the protective measures at the airport must be reviewed,” she added.
