A one-day strike by Lufthansa pilots and flight attendants is causing major disruptions for travelers flying on Germany’s largest airline this Thursday.
Close to 800 flights were canceled, leaving approximately 100,000 passengers stranded. Lufthansa said it is attempting to rebook passengers on other airlines or partner carriers, but operations are not expected to return to normal until Friday, when the airline plans to resume its regular schedule.
The strike is only impacting Lufthansa mainline flights; other airlines within the Lufthansa Group, including Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Air Dolomiti, and Eurowings, are not affected. Much of the impact is being felt at the carrier’s hubs in Munich and Frankfurt, both of which are seeing extensive cancellations.
Lufthansa has issued a flight change waiver for all affected passengers who cannot be rebooked.
The pilots’ union strike centers on pension disputes, while flight attendants are striking as they negotiate a new contract with the airline. According to the flight attendants’ union, the strike landing on the same day as the pilots’ action is a coincidence, but it is one they welcome.
