Winter Storm Halts Travel

January 22, 2016

The first major winter storm of the year is bearing down on the East Coast and, with 20 inches of snow expected in some areas, travel has started to slow down.

According to Flightaware, more than 5,000 Friday and Saturday flights have already been canceled, including close to 300 in and out of both major Washington D.C. area airports.

Some airlines aren’t waiting to see the extent of the storm and have already announced cancellations. American Airlines canceled all Charlotte flights for Friday and all Saturday flights in or out of Washington, Baltimore, and Philadelphia.

United Airlines will not fly any routes out of Washington Dulles International or other mid-Atlantic airports starting Friday afternoon.

American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines, JetBlue, United Airlines, and Frontier all will allow passengers to change or cancel tickets at no extra cost.

The storm is affecting travel on the ground as well. Amtrak will operate, but with fewer trains, and advises checking its website for updates.
