United Airlines is expanding a program that allows passengers to check their bags curbside the night before their flight at Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD).
The service, called Twilight Bag Drop, lets passengers departing before 10 a.m. check their luggage curbside from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. the previous evening. To participate, passengers have to complete check-in ahead of time via the United app or website and pre-pay any applicable baggage fees.
Then, they’ll be able to drive up to Terminal 1, departures level, outside door 1Da, and drop their bags the night before their flight. The pitch for passengers is that, if they have an early morning flight, and don’t want to have to pile their bags into a rideshare or taxi, or want to take public transportation to O’Hare, they can get rid of their bags the night before and have an easier morning going to the airport.
United has been testing the concept since March and will now offer it permanently at O’Hare. According to a spokesperson, nearly 1,600 bags have already been checked through the program.
O’Hare isn’t the only location featuring this service—United also offers Twilight Bag Drop at Antonio B. Won Pat International Airport in Guam (GUM), and it could be rolled out to additional airports in the future.
The program may be new for U.S. airlines, but it’s fairly common in Europe. Airlines like British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, and EasyJet offer the same at hubs like London Heathrow (LHR) and Edinburgh (EDI).
United has also been testing a separate “Home Bag Pick-Up” service for some zip codes in the Chicago area. In that program, United sends a courier to a traveler’s house the day before to take the luggage. There’s no word on an expansion for that program, yet.
