Alaska Airlines announced plans Tuesday to join American Airlines’ Atlantic and Pacific Joint Businesses, a move that significantly expands its global footprint and strengthens international connectivity for West Coast travelers.
The move builds on Alaska’s existing membership in the oneworld alliance and aims to fully integrate the carrier into American’s Atlantic Joint Business – which includes British Airways, Iberia, Finnair, Aer Lingus, and LEVEL – as well as its Pacific Joint Business with Japan Airlines.
All of it is subject to U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and Department of Transportation (DOT) approval. Alaska and American said on Tuesday that they plan to file for antitrust immunity and the rest of their regulatory approvals with the DOT and international authorities in the coming months.
If approved, the expanded joint ventures will allow the partner airlines to coordinate schedules, align commercial operations, and offer reciprocal loyalty benefits across both global networks.
For travel advisors and their clients, the agreement promises improved transatlantic and transpacific routing, smoother codeshare connections through key West Coast hubs, and broader global reach while preserving Alaska’s signature guest experience.
