American Airlines Adds 7 New International Routes and 3 Destinations for Summer 2027

American Airlines on Thursday announced a slate of new international routes and destinations for summer 2027, mostly focused on European gateways and expanded long-haul capacity. In total, American will add seven new international routes and launch service to three new destinations.

Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) is at the heart of the expansion. From there, American will introduce daily service to Vienna International Airport (VIE), Austria, starting May 6, 2027, on an Airbus A321XLR, the same jets that are fueling United’s 2027 summer expansion. The Vienna route will run through early January 2028 to capture demand for European holiday markets.

Alongside Vienna, American will launch daily flights from Philadelphia to Francisco de Sá Carneiro Airport (OPO) in Porto, Portugal, on March 28, 2027, also on the A321XLR, and will then return to Keflavík International Airport (KEF) in Reykjavik, Iceland, for the first time since 2019 with daily service beginning May 27, 2027, on an Airbus A321neo.

The expansion also features significant additions out of New York, Charlotte, and Chicago.

From John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), American will launch new A321XLR routes to Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS) on March 28, 2027, and to Nice Côte d’Azur Airport (NCE), France, on May 6, 2027.

Out of Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT), daily Boeing 777-200ER service to Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport (BCN), Spain, will begin May 27, 2027, giving American more service to Barcelona than any other U.S. airline.

Additionally, out of Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD), American will fly daily Boeing 787-9 service to Narita International Airport (NRT) in Tokyo starting March 19, 2027.

Beyond new markets, American is boosting capacity on key existing routes. The airline will reintroduce a fourth daily frequency between New York and London Heathrow Airport (LHR) starting March 28, 2027, featuring its premium Flagship Suite seats on a Boeing 787-9. Combined with joint business partner British Airways, the carriers will offer up to 14 daily flights between New York and London.

American will also move up its seasonal start dates to March 4, 2027, for routes connecting Charlotte to Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) and Miami International Airport (MIA) to Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP), responding to rising spring break travel demand across Europe.
