Flight operations across Texas face heavy disruption today as severe thunderstorms sweep through major air transit corridors.
Both George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) in Houston-alongside North Texas hubs like Dallas/Fort Worth International (DFW) and Dallas Love Field (DAL)-are recording high volumes of delayed and canceled flights canceled flights following a wave of Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) ground stops.
Data from FlightAware highlights major operational bottlenecks across both Houston airports:
George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH): Ranking among the most disrupted airports globally, IAH has recorded 120 delayed departures (17% of total outbound flights) and 67 delayed arrivals (9% of total inbound flights).
William P. Hobby Airport (HOU): Outbound traffic at Hobby is taking a notable hit, with 69 delayed departures-representing a quarter (25%) of the airport’s scheduled outbound volume-and 31 delayed arrivals (9%).
The issues in Texas aren’t confined to Houston. Dallas/Fort Worth International (DFW) and Dallas Love Field (DAL) lead nationwide flight disruptions, with DFW logging over 800 delays and 260 cancellations due to storms around that city.
Active Airline Travel Waivers
Major carriers operating out of Texas hubs have issued flexible travel advisories and fare waivers to help passengers rebook affected flights, but have not yet extended them to Houston.
American Airlines: Has issued a flexible travel alert for passengers flying through Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW). Change fees are waived for rebooking without penalty.
Southwest Airlines: Has issued a weather travel advisory for Dallas Love Field (DAL). Passengers traveling to, from, or through DAL can rebook or travel standby within 14 days of their original travel date without paying additional fare differences.
United Airlines & Delta Air Lines: Rebooking fee waivers and flexible change policies are active for travelers connecting through affected Texas airports experiencing severe weather ground holds.
