American Airlines Launches Automated Seat-Swapping Tool in App

American Airlines has rolled out a new feature inside its mobile app designed to eliminate the need for passengers to manually refresh seat maps in search of a better spot.
The automated seat-monitoring tool allows AAdvantage members traveling on single-passenger itineraries to set specific seat preferences—such as window, aisle, or location toward the front of the cabin—right after completing a booking. If a seat matching those criteria opens up, the app automatically reassigns the traveler and sends a push notification.
Here is what travel advisors and their clients need to know about how the system operates:
- Scope and Eligibility: The feature is available exclusively for single-passenger reservations (single PNRs) booked under an AAdvantage account. Multi-passenger bookings are not currently eligible.
- Pricing Rules: Reassignments remain strictly within the customer’s existing ticketed cabin. The app will not trigger any additional fees, nor will it automatically bump a client into a higher-priced paid seat or extra-legroom option without consent.
- Priority and Cutoff: When multiple passengers request the same seat type, requests are prioritized first by AAdvantage elite status level and then by the order in which preferences were saved. Automatic monitoring stops 24 hours before departure, at which point traditional seat map management takes over.
- Limitations: Exit-row seats are excluded from the automated swap system, and the process turns off automatically once a single reassignment occurs or if the traveler manually adjusts their seat.
“At American, we’re always looking for ways to make travel easier and more personalized for our customers,” said Heather Garboden, Chief Customer Officer at American Airlines. “This latest innovation proactively addresses customer preference. It is a simple experience that gives customers more control while asking them to do less.”
American is not the only U.S. airline to offer this kind of feature. United Airlines also has automated seat-swapping in its app.
