8 Ways MedallionClass on the New Sky Princess Stands Out

Technology at sea just took a big step forward with the launching of the Princess MedallionClass Experience on Sky Princess, Princess Cruises’ newest ship that made its debut in October. It is the first MedallionClass new-build with the innovative technology enabling higher personalized service and interactive options.

MedallionClass Vacations are currently available on Caribbean Princess, Crown Princess, Regal Princess and Royal Princess. Look for the complimentary and wearable OceanMedallion and its apps to be available on six additional ships in 2020: Ruby Princess (Jan. 27), Grand Princess (Mar. 29), the new Enchanted Princess (June 15), Emerald Princess (Aug. 16), Coral Princess (Oct. 16) and Island Princess (Dec. 20).

Here are eight ways MedallionClass on the new Sky Princess stands out.

1. The OceanMedallion
Let’s start with the complimentary OceanMedallion itself, the cool disc — which replaces a key card — and can be worn on the included lanyard or placed in wearable extras available for a fee that include watches, bracelets, necklaces and clip-ons. This powerful disc and all it can do will excite even the most non-techy of clients.

The best way to experience the OceanMedallion is to download the MedallionClass and OceanCompass apps. Even without the apps, the OceanMedallion and the MedallionClass experience can be enjoyed in various ways onboard. Stateroom televisions and interactive OceanCompass portals throughout the ship enable non-smartphone users access to some of the tech fun.

2. Ocean-ready excitement
The OceanMedallion can be mailed to guests’ homes before sailing if their passports are uploaded to their profiles. Do this and clients get an expedited check-in process. For those who don’t receive their OceanMedallion pre-cruise, it will be waiting for them at the port.

3. Keyless stateroom entry

Guests no longer need to search for their keys as they approach their stateroom doors. The OceanMedallion automatically unlocks doors similar to using a remote key fob to open a car. Personalized greetings on stateroom door portals welcome guests and note any special occasions. They will also let guests know that doors are locked upon leaving staterooms.

4. Shipmates finder and more
My personal favorite part of the MedallionClass Experience while sailing onboard the Sky Princess was the OceanCompass app that allows guests to locate friends and family onboard. Simply type in the name and find shipmates and a request is sent to them for approval. This function is a key sales feature, especially for families traveling together. The app, as well as digital signs throughout the ship, also allow for point-to-point “wayfinding” from wherever guests are on the ship to where they want to go, such as Alfredo’s Pizzeria or the Lotus Spa.

5. Time to chat
Also part of the OceanCompass app is the Chat function, which enables guests to text their ShipMates individually or in a group text. This is another wonderful function for families or friends traveling together.

6. Plan the week
Princess still delivers the nightly printed version of the schedule of what’s happening on the ship, but the MedallionClass app through JourneyView also has a complete schedule of what’s happening. Simply touch the activity and a pop-up describes it more fully. Even better, guests are able to see the schedule for the entire voyage 60 days before their trip so they can plan their meals or spa treatments around their must-attend trivia or something else happening at that time. Plus, there is no longer a need for guests to carry the paper schedule around.

7. Request on-demand services
Within the MedallionClass app, the OceanNow function allows guests to order food, beverage, retail items and even extra towels, and get them delivered wherever they are in the ship.

8. Access fast WiFi
Along with the MedallionClass vacation capability comes MedallionNet WiFi, which is super-fast and equal to an onshore experience. Though not complimentary, guests will be pleased to find themselves able to keep in touch back home or even stream videos while onboard.
