Hospitality Industry Point-Of-Sale System Hacked
A point-of-sale system widely used across the hospitality industry was the victim of a data breach.
MICROS Systems, purchased by Oracle in 2014, said malware was found in some systems run by MICROS. The cyber-attack targeted customers’ login credentials, leaving Oracle to require new account passwords.
It’s unclear when the attackers first gained access to Oracle’s systems.
Major hotel chains including AccorHotels, Starwood Hotels & Resorts, InterContinental Hotel Group, Hyatt, Wyndham, FHRI and MGM Resorts use the company’s point-of-sale program. As of 2014, MICROS was used at more than 330,000 sites across 180 countries.
