The Iconic Las Vegas Mirage Volcano Is Coming Back

It’s not quite the end for The Mirage Las Vegas’ volcano just yet as one of the Strip’s most iconic sites is going to stick around just a little while longer.

Joe Lupo, the President of the Mirage, told Travel Market Report today that the hotel intends on turning the Mirage volcano back on during the second week of December following the dismantling of the installation built around the Mirage for this month’s F1 Grand Prix.

After that, the Mirage plans to operate the volcano through at least January with more updates to follow.

“The volcano has been turned off since the beginning of September for the build-out of the F1 Grandstands in front of the Mirage, sitting over the lagoon adjacent to the volcano. Yes, we intend to turn the volcano back on the second week of December, after all materials will be dismantled and free of the space, following the completion of the F1 race,” Lupo told TMR.

“We expect the volcano to operate through January and are working on the current timeline now and will provide more updates following F1 regarding the Paramount activation and how that affects the volcano display.”

The volcano opened with the Mirage in 1989 and has been its signature attraction, and one of Las Vegas’ signature attractions, ever since. The volcano erupts regularly each night, one of the stalwart sights and sounds of the Strip.

When Hard Rock International purchased the Mirage in 2021, it marked the start of the end for the resort and the volcano, though a clear timeline was never revealed.

Some news reports this week suggested that the volcano had already had its final days because of some planned work around the volcano over the next few months.

The thought was that Hard Rock wouldn’t reopen the volcano as once the F1 Grand Prix wraps up, another activation, this one for the Super Bowl in early February, is planned at the Volcano site. But Lupo said this week that Las Vegas locals and guests will still have the chance to see the Mirage’s signature attraction one last time.
