Halifax Airport.
High fuel costs are driving difficult route decisions, and Halifax has been hit particularly hard of late, with three transatlantic flights removed from next year’s schedule in recent days.
Both WestJet’s Halifax-Copenhagen and Halifax-Madrid routes are no longer scheduled for 2027, after their debut for the summer 2026 season. As well, Icelandair is dropping its Halifax-Reykjavik route.
WestJet has also cancelled 2027 planned flights from Toronto to Glasgow, deciding to consolidate on the higher-yield Toronto-Edinburgh route.
Air Transat will now be the sole operator between YYZ and GLA, with flights on the Airbus A321LR. Air Canada and WestJet will fly between YYZ and EDI.
The stubbornly high cost of aviation fuel is having a major impact on route decisions, with non-profitable or marginal routes under increasing scrutiny.
Observers expect to see more route cuts to come.
