United Airlines Moves to Preorder-Only for All Fresh Meals in Economy

United Airlines is now allowing economy passengers to lock in meal orders via the United app or website before they board.

Starting immediately, United is allowing economy passengers on flights over 1,190 miles within the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean to preorder meals.

However, the move comes with a significant catch: Starting March 1, only economy passengers who have placed a preorder will be able to purchase fresh entrees onboard. Those who do not preorder will still be able to purchase United’s snack boxes, packaged snacks, and beverages, but they will be unable to order a fresh meal during the flight.

United says the shift allows economy passengers to ensure they get the meal they want while helping the airline reduce food waste. United has allowed premium cabin passengers to preorder meals since 2021, a move it claims has helped increase customer satisfaction on domestic flights by nearly 40%.

United, like its competitors, cycles its meal options regularly. For January, the economy menu includes a Steakhouse Burger, Tacos Al Pastor, a Fresh Cheese & Fruit Tray, and Everything Bagel Dots. The airline says it will add additional choices to the preorder menu this summer, including elevated salads, sandwiches, and wraps.
