U.S. State Department Warns Americans About Traveling to the Middle East

Due to continuing, and now escalating, regional tensions, the U.S. Department of State has issued a new regional security alert urging Americans to “seriously reconsider” travel to and through the Middle East.

“Iranian-supported Houthis have engaged in hostilities against Saudi Arabia, including civilian airports. This military conflict has the potential to escalate rapidly. Americans outside the Middle East should seriously reconsider travel to and through the region,” the State Department shared via a @TravelGov post on X.

The alert also advises U.S. citizens currently in the Middle East to maintain heightened vigilance and prepare for operational issues, including flight cancellations, sudden airspace closures, and routing changes.

For travel advisors with clients booked on itineraries through Middle Eastern air hubs-such as Dubai, Doha, or Abu Dhabi-or traveling directly to destinations in the region, the immediate focus should be on checking carrier policies for waivers and schedule changes before clients head to the airport.

Advisors should also review destination-specific advisories on travel.state.gov, as the State Department’s warning level varies country by country. Saudi Arabia, for example, currently sits at Level 3 (Reconsider Travel), while Yemen remains at Level 4 (Do Not Travel). Lastly, advisors should encourage any clients in or traveling to the region to enroll in the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive direct security updates and ensure local embassy access in an emergency.
