HX (formerly Hurtigruten Expeditions) is investing more than 7 million euro into the refurbishments of MS Fram and MS Spitsbergen.

“These significant investments in MS Fram and MS Spitsbergen reflect our commitment to delivering world-class expedition experiences,” said Gebhard Rainer, CEO of HX. “From enhanced public spaces to a stronger focus on science and education, these upgrades will elevate every aspect of the journey. When guests step aboard in spring 2025, they’ll experience a more immersive, comfortable, and seamless adventure—built on our dedication to continuous improvement.”

MS Fram

Fully upgraded in 2022, HX is nevertheless putting MS Fram back into dry dock for a complete redesign of the science center, along with enhancements to guest accommodations, public areas, and crew facilities.

A total of 19 Arctic Superior cabins will be completely renovated, including updated bathrooms. Additionally, 14 Expedition Suites and six Expedition Grand Suites will be fully refurbished. Post-refurbishment, these cabins will be capable of offering a twin-bed configuration option.

All Polar Cabins will be upgraded with new bathrooms.

The ship’s Aune Restaurant will receive improvements both to the public spaces as well as the galley, which will be updated to enhance operational efficiency.

The 36 crew cabins will also undergo renovations including full bathroom refurbishment, along with refreshed carpets and sofas.

The refurbishment work will take place this April in Panama dry dock, with the ship returning to service on May 26, 2025.

MS Spitsbergen

The 220-passenger MS Spitsbergen will undergo a similar refurbishment this February and March including getting an all-new science center.

As for accommodation and public space upgrades, all Polar Cabins will be upgraded with new bathrooms, while the ship’s Explorer Bar will receive a refreshed design.

The ship will also receive a new bistro concept – Brygge Bistro – offering guests a selection of snacks throughout the day.

Around the ship, refurbished ADA bathrooms will improve accessibility, while new interpreter setups will allow guests to listen to science and educational talks in multiple languages.

Crew areas and dining facilities will also be expanded.

MS Spitsbergen returns to service on April 2, 2025.
