PONANT’s 2024 Sustainability Report: CO2 Reduction and Elimination of Single-Use Plastic

by Marsha Mowers  October 14, 2025
PONANT’s 2024 Sustainability Report: CO2 Reduction and Elimination of Single-Use Plastic

PONANT EXPLORATIONS GROUP is already nearly halfway to reaching its goal of 30% reduction in Co2 emissions by 2030, according to its 2024 Sustainability Report.

The report outlines major milestones including having reduced its per cruise day emissions by 14% compared to the 2018 baseline, due to better in-fleet energy efficiency and the integration of alternative energy solutions.

A major achievement in PONANT’s sustainability journey is the complete elimination of single-use plastics, preventing 20 tonnes of plastic waste in a single year. This success is complemented by onboard systems that convert seawater into drinking water, further reducing environmental impact.

In addition, the Group ensures 100% of waste is sorted on board and is collaborating closely with local port partners to reach a 50% waste recovery rate by 2026.

“Our 2024 Sustainability Report provides a clear picture of the progress we have made as well as the road ahead,” says Wassim Daoud, PONANT EXPLORATIONS GROUP’s Head of CSR and Sustainability.

“We are continuing on our path towards decarbonization and are taking concrete steps to reduce our environmental impact, support scientific research, and help local communities.”

To reach its Net Zero 2050 objective, PONANT EXPLORATIONS GROUP is also pursuing a groundbreaking innovation program focused on naval design and propulsion. Supported by the European Union’s Innovation Fund (Emissions Trading System), the Swap2Zero project represents a bold R&D effort. By combining six pioneering decarbonization technologies, this next-generation transoceanic vessel aims to operate with zero CO₂-equivalent emissions.
