After much speculation, Royal Caribbean has confirmed its plans for a new class of ship, the Discovery Class, with an order for two ships from the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in Saint Nazaire, France.
“The Discovery Class represents our continued commitment to shaping the future of vacations. These ships will be a showcase of what’s possible when design meets purpose, ultimately bringing the world closer to our guests,” said Jason Liberty, chairman and CEO, Royal Caribbean Group.
The two-ship order also has an options clause for four additional ships. The first ship is set to debut in 2029, while the second ship is scheduled for delivery in 2032. No details about the Class have yet been revealed, but Liberty has previously talked about wanting to build smaller ships than the Oasis and Icon Class.
“The Discovery Class introduces a bold new concept that puts our guests at the center of it all,” said Michael Bayley, President and CEO, Royal Caribbean. “It will deliver extraordinary, one-of-a-kind experiences — from cutting edge design to immersive moments — every detail crafted to surprise and delight guests in ways they’ve never imagined, all while visiting truly breathtaking destinations around the world.”
Royal Caribbean Group has a long history with Chantiers de l’Atlantique, dating back to 1985 when the shipyard constructed Royal Caribbean’s original Sovereign Class ships. More recently, the shipyard has built Oasis Class ships, as well as Celebrity Cruises’ Edge Class vessels. Both Oasis 7 and Celebrity Xcite are currently under construction at the shipyard.
