A 4.0-magnitude earthquake hit the Italian resort island of Ischia off the coast of Naples Monday night, killing two people.

The quake struck Ischia around 9 p.m. local time, collapsing buildings and cutting off electricity. At high season for tourists, Italian authorities organized ferries early Tuesday to bring visitors back to the mainland.

At least 39 people were injured and 2,600 were left homeless. Firefighters worked through the night to rescue people from the rubble, including a seven-month-old baby and his two older brothers.

In August last year a powerful 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck the Central Italian regions of Lazio, Marche and Umbria and killed more than 140 people. The Marche region, also in Central Italy, was hit with two earthquakes in October.
