Update: Fire Closes Two Iberostar Hotels on Riviera Maya
More than 1,000 guests were evacuated this weekend from two Iberostar hotels on Mexico’s Riviera Maya that went up in flame.
The fire, believed to have started in the electrical system, quickly spread to the lobby, restaurants, spa, and theatre at the Iberostar Tucan and Iberostar Quetzal.
Iberostar says it will be able to fully assess the damage in a week, and its goal is to “have the hotels fully operational by mid-December.”
About 20 people were treated for smoke inhalation but no one was seriously injured, reports TravelMole.
Guests were moved to the Iberostar Playa Parasio.
Other areas including rooms were not affected, Iberostar said.
All guests arriving at the hotels within the next week will be moved to the Iberostar Paraiso Complex, and Iberostar “will provide an update shortly regarding all other future stays.”
