All Major American Airlines Apply to Fly to Cuba

by Daniel McCarthy  March 03, 2016

Six of the largest U.S. airlines have submitted applications to the government to fly commercial flights to Cuba.

American Airlines, Alaska Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines, United Airlines, and JetBlue have all stated their case for some of the 20 round-trip flights per day between the United States and Havana, and 10 daily round-trip flights between the United States other Cuban cities allowed by the new agreement.

The United States and Cuba signed an agreement in March to restore scheduled airline service for the first time in more than 50 years. Airlines had 15 days to submit applications.

American requested permission to fly to Cuba from Miami, Los Angeles, Chicago, Charlotte, and Dallas/Fort Worth.

Alaska filed an application to fly two daily nonstop flights from Los Angeles to Havana.

Delta requested permission to fly to Havana from Atlanta, New York, Miami, and Orlando.

JetBlue is requesting to operate 15 daily flights to four Cuban cities from New York, Newark, Boston, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, and Tampa.

Southwest’s application included flights to Cuba from three Florida airports: Fort Lauderdale, Tampa, and Orlando.

United filed to fly to Cuba from New York, Newark, Chicago, Washington, D.C., and Houston.

A final decision on slots will be made by the Department of Transportation later this summer.
