Egypt to Pilot Digital Visa-on-Arrival System at Cairo Airport Starting August 1

Starting August 1, 2026, international travelers landing at Cairo International Airport (CAI) can secure their entry visa online before arriving in Egypt, bypassing the traditional bank counters at immigration, as part of a new Digital Visa-on-Arrival System.

All U.S. citizens visiting Egypt are required to obtain an entry visa. Under the new Digital Visa-on-Arrival System, a single-entry visa costs $36 USD ($30 for the base visa plus a $6 processing fee), and no longer requires waiting in line to purchase a paper sticker upon arrival.

Travelers can apply and pay electronically using a credit or debit card via the official online portal or mobile app up to 48 hours prior to travel. Alternatively, self-service kiosks will be available in Cairo Airport’s arrival halls for those who prefer to complete the process after landing.

During the initial pilot phase, Cairo Airport will continue to staff bank teller windows prior to passport control for travelers who still prefer the physical, adhesive visa sticker. However, the government eventually plans to phase out the physical stickers entirely, making the digital QR code the sole option.

Egypt also plans to extend the system to the country’s other airports in stages, with dates announced in advance.

The goal, the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism & Antiquities said, is to modernize the visa system.
