Hong Kong Welcomes Year of the Snake, Emphasizes Trade Support

The Chinese New Year is a time for new beginnings and to celebrate friendship and collaboration.

In an annual event co-sponsored by the Hong Kong Tourism Board and the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Toronto), the Year of the Snake was ushered in with a traditional lion dance and other entertainment, food and drink, before some 170 invited guests at the Malaparte event space at Toronto’s TIFF Lightbox.

According to legend, snakes are the deep thinkers of the zodiac, known for a calm demeanor, resourcefulness, and an ability to analyze situations and navigate challenges with grace.

There are always challenges in the travel and tourism space, but Hong Kong Tourism Board Senior Manager Marketing & Public Relations Jorge Lee says the Canadian industry has a strong partner.

“When many believe that travel agents and tour operators are a thing of the past, we continue to support their efforts. And we’re seeing results,” Lee told the New Year audience.

“We remain committed to supporting Canadian media, trade media, travel agents and tour operators. Last year Hong Kong welcomed 320,000 Canadians, up 50% from the year before. We can’t do this without our trade partners,” Lee added.

Emily Mo, Director of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Toronto), discussed the robust economy of Hong Kong, recently rated 5th in the world for competitiveness. She referenced the U.S. threat of tariffs on Canada, suggesting that Canada should seek to do more business with the “most free economy in the world.”

“Canada could benefit from diversification after the global change that took place this week,” she said.”
