Airbnb’s Growth Doesn’t Affect Manhattan’s Hotel Industry, Study Says

February 09, 2016

Airbnb’s presence in Manhattan doesn’t affect the city’s hotel performance, asserts an independent analysis conducted by STR.

STR compared daily hotel data in Manhattan to daily Airbnb data in the market between December 2013 and November 2015, and found no relationship between high demand at Airbnb and low occupancy rates or average daily rates at hotels. It also found no evidence that the number of occupied Airbnb rooms are actually subtracted from hotel occupancy rates.

The bottom line, the study says, is that Airbnb’s growth does not have a severe impact on hotel performance, despite common belief otherwise.
