Another Potential Tropical Storm Could Hit the Caribbean this Week

A weather system currently in the Atlantic could potentially bring another named storm to the 2024 hurricane season.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) on Monday issued a notice for a new storm system, particularly for those in the North Atlantic, and more specifically the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico.

As of the latest update on Tuesday morning, the system was in the Atlantic several hundred miles west of Africa’s Cabo Verde Islands, producing some thunderstorms and showers. There is a low chance that the system will form into a storm system over the next two days (10%), but the NHC gives it a 60% chance of forming over the next week.

“This system is forecast to move generally westward and environmental conditions are expected to become more favorable for gradual development by the middle to latter part of this week. A tropical depression could form as the system begins moving west-northwestward and approaches or moves near the Leeward Islands late this week,” the NHC said.

There’s a lot to wait for on the forecast, and more will be known as the storm forms or does not form over the next few days. The NHC, for now, has the storm on track to hit the Leeward Islands in the Caribbean. It has not provided a forecast for where the storm could go after that.

The forecast comes as some sections of the Caribbean and Florida are still reeling from Hurricane Milton and Hurricane Helene.
