Another Tropical Storm Is Forming in the Caribbean as Hurricane Season Persists
by Daniel McCarthy /With Thanksgiving in the U.S. approaching, the Atlantic hurricane season shows no signs of slowing.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported Monday a 90% chance that the 18th named storm of the season will form this week, potentially named Sara. A “broad area of low pressure over the central Caribbean Sea” is expected to become a tropical depression within 48 hours and likely strengthen further as it moves northwest.
While exact details remain uncertain, the NHC advises heavy rains for Jamaica and urges others in the Caribbean to monitor the storm’s path, which may bring it toward Cancun and the Yucatán Peninsula this weekend.
This season, the Atlantic has produced 17 named storms, 11 hurricanes, and five major hurricanes. The strongest storms—Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton—both hit Florida in September as Category 4 hurricanes.
