New Law Allows IRS to Revoke Your Passport If You Owe Back Taxes
President Obama yesterday signed into law a bill that allows the IRS to revoke U.S. passports of those who owe back taxes.
The new law, part of a larger bill that earmarked $305 billion for infrastructure projects, allows the IRS to take passports away—or deny applications—from U.S. citizens who owe the IRS $50,000 or more.
It comes as new Real ID requirements are about to go into enforcement, requiring U.S. citizens in four states to have a passport even to fly domestically. So now they will only be able to do so if they don’t owe the IRS.
