Apple Will Soon Allow Flyers to Add Passports to Apple Wallet

Apple will soon allow its users to input their passports into Apple Wallet, but the Digital ID passport will only be accepted for domestic travel.

The feature will be available with the release of the iOS 26 update this fall and allow users to “seamlessly create and add a Digital ID to Apple Wallet using a U.S. passport,” Apple said in a June 10 news release.

“Like all IDs in Apple Wallet, this new solution takes advantage of the privacy and security features already built into iPhone and Apple Watch.”

The Digital ID does not replace a physical passport, which will still be required for all international travel. Users will only be able to present it for domestic trips at airports that accept Digital ID.

In the realm of travel, Apple’s new update will also introduce refreshed boarding passes for major airlines that offer more convenient access to Maps for airport navigation, Find My tracking services, Live Activities sharing, and other key airline services.

Google Digital Passport Options

Travelers not in the Apple ecosystem have already had a simliar option.

Late last year, Google announced that Google Wallet users could create and store a digital version of their U.S. passport on their phones. The feature, available only for Android users and just like the plans for Apple, allows travelers to pass through security at select U.S. airports without having to present a physical passport.

To create the digital passport, users must open the Google Wallet app, select “Create an ID pass with your U.S. passport,” and follow the prompts. The process requires users to scan the passport’s information page and chip, then complete a facial recognition scan to link their biometrics to the passport. The verification process may take a few minutes.
