New Orleans’ iconic Bourbon Street will reopen this afternoon, about a day-and-a-half after 15 people were killed in a terrorist attack on the street.
A spokesperson for The Royal Sonesta New Orleans, the hotel near where the attack ended on Wednesday morning, told TMR that Bourbon Street will be reopening to traffic at 2:30 p.m. local time today.
The spokesperson also confirmed that the hotel is open and operating.
“While this is a fluid situation, all services including food and beverage are available at the hotel. We are continuing to update in-house guests as the situation evolves,” the spokesperson told TMR.
The attack took place early in the hours of Wednesday morning, with Bourbon Street still filled with New Years Eve celebrations. According to authorities, a driver maneuvered a pickup truck around a police blockade and plowed into pedestrians on Bourbon Street at around 3 a.m. local time. The suspect was shot and killed by police, who later found guns and explosive devices in the truck.
According to FBI statements, the suspect is Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old U.S. citizen from Texas. The FBI said on Wednesday that it does not believe that he acted alone, and a full investigation was ongoing.
Authorities said on Thursday that the incident was likely not connected to the vehicle that exploded in Las Vegas outside of the Trump International on Wednesday.
