Possible Tropical Storm Patty Is Forming in the Caribbean

Another storm system quietly brewing in the Caribbean could mean that the 2024 Hurricane System is not over just yet.

As of Monday at 11 a.m., the National Hurricane Center (NHC) is tracking “a broad area of low pressure” that is “likely” to develop over the southwestern Caribbean Sea in a few days. The NHC continued to track the storm, with the same forecast, on Tuesday.

There is still a lot of uncertainty in the forecast, but the NHC says that a tropical depression could form “late this week or over the weekend” as the system drifts over the southwestern and central Caribbean Sea. The NHC is giving it a 40% chance to develop.

It’s not clear where the storm would hit exactly if it does form, but the NHC says it is likely to “drift northward or northeastward” generally.

If a major storm does develop, the next named storm for the 2024 Atlantic season will be Patty.
