Restrictions On Individual Travel To Cuba Lifted

March 15, 2016

The Obama administration announced today it will now allow individuals to travel to Cuba for “people to people” educational trips, which have been banned by the nearly half century old embargo.

Previously, Americans were only allowed to make educational visits in groups.

The administration also removed limitations on the amount of American dollars used in Cuban transactions, and permitted Cubans to open accounts at American banks and use them to remit payments back home. Additionally, Cuban nationals working in the states will be able to earn a salary.

The announcement comes as President Obama gears up for his historic visit to Cuba next week. Since opening diplomatic relations with Cuba in 2014, the administration has slowly been easing up on sanctions with the Communist nation.
