Amtrak Offers Pets-Ride-Free Promotion
Amtrak is allowing passengers to bring their pets on board free for trips booked Dec. 6-11, 2016, for travel Dec. 9, 2016, through March 31, 2017.
The “Pets Ride Free” offer is available in 40 Amtrak markets, including New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, Minneapolis, San Francisco, Oakland, Dallas, Baltimore, Cleveland, Portland, Seattle, St. Louis, New Orleans, Pittsburgh, Orlando, Miami, Jacksonville, Charleston and others.
More than 15,000 dogs and cats have traveled with their owners on select Amtrak trains across the country since Amtrak began allowing pets other than service animals to board trains. Amtrak charges $25 for a pet to ride with a paid passenger.
To travel with a small dog or cat, tickets must be purchased at least three days prior to travel. Only one cat or one small dog is allowed in an enclosed carrier on trips up to seven hours in length. Both pet and carrier must be a combined weight of 20 pounds.
