Antigua Says It’s Open for Business

by Jessica Montevago  September 25, 2017

As other Caribbean islands recover from historic hurricanes Irma and Maria, Antigua says it’s open for business.

No hotels have closed as a result of the hurricanes, though a few properties closed prior for their annual renovations in preparation for the busy holiday season.

Resorts including Cocobay, Jumby Bay, Curtain Bluff, Carlisle Bay, Hawksbill by Rex Resorts, Heritage, St. James’s Club, The Inn at English Harbor, and Nonsuch Bay all reported no structural damages.

The V.C. Bird International Airport has resumed normal operations as well.

The Director of Tourism for the U.S. Kim Jack-Riley said “Our focus now is to seek the assistance from our travel partners within the industry to help us help Barbuda, who has been left devastated by the hurricane. By supporting tourism in Antigua, your patronage will help us to rebuild Barbuda.”

While Antigua came out of Hurricane Irma relatively unscathed, twin-island state Barbuda was devastated, with 95 percent of buildings destroyed or extensively damaged.

“The best way to help our islands as we return to normal is for visitors to continue with their vacation plans or make plans to visit us soon to experience at first hand the warmth and hospitality of our people,” Tourism Minister Asot. Michael said.
