How Travel Agencies Can Identify — and Combat — Unseen Revenue
by Brittany Chrusciel
Someone would notice if your business was missing revenue, right? Well, what if the revenue isn’t necessarily lost but just not fully visible? If this sounds like a made-up problem, think again.
Invisible or unseen revenue is income that an agency has earned but cannot easily track or reconcile, which can lead to financial uncertainty and even a cash flow strain for agencies and advisors alike.
The impact of unseen revenue extends well beyond simply waiting for payment, according to Tony Wagner, Chief Commercial Officer for Onyx CenterSource, a leading global provider of B2B payments and business intelligence solutions for the hospitality industry.
“There is also a real time cost,” Wagner says. “Every hour spent checking payment status, matching records, or following up is time that could be spent serving clients or generating new bookings.”
A quarterly global commission data report from Onyx for Q3 2026 found that hotel commission payments average 41 days. “When payment cycles look like that, visibility throughout the process becomes especially important,” says Wagner, noting that agencies have payroll, operating expenses, and growth decisions to manage. “When [advisors] cannot clearly see what is outstanding or when payments are likely to arrive, financial planning gets harder and tensions rise.”
So how can agencies stay on top of identifying invisible revenue and tracking payments? Wagner has a few suggestions.
Keep the Receipts
That is to say, advisors should be vigilant about the accuracy of the data in their booking platforms. “Agencies should be able to connect each commissionable booking to the completed stay and the payment that follows,” says Wagner. “That means advisors need to leverage agency booking platforms and should they book direct, enter those reservations in the agency platform. Agencies need to keep booking details, agency identifiers, and commission terms accurate, and review outstanding commissions consistently.”
Identify Repetition
The next step, according to Wagner, is to identify where your team is spending time on repetitive work. “Matching payments, updating spreadsheets, and sending routine follow-ups are all areas where automation and specialized support can make a real difference,” he says. “Reconciliation and collection automation, including rules on specialized terms with key partners, can minimize this operational cost. In fact, we see strong ROI when agencies share booking data with Onyx, allowing us to reconcile bookings against hotel stay data and improve both visibility and commission recovery.”
Measure Supplier Cost/Benefit Ratio
Wagner believes that when it comes to working with suppliers, it is important to measure more than total dollars collected. He recommends looking at how long payments take to land, how much remains outstanding, and how much staff time goes into collecting commissions.
“Those measures give a much clearer picture of the true operational cost of commission management and should be incorporated into the booking process for advisors,” urges Wagner. “If you keep booking suppliers who never pay or are slow payers, their habits won’t change.”
Let AI Do the Heavy Lifting
OnyxPay is a newly launched platform intended to strengthen agency infrastructure by adding transaction-level visibility, grouped-payment tracking, and data exports that enhance matching and reconciliation. AI-assisted matching can identify when different names or records refer to the same hotel, agency, or guest, and helps connect reservation changes to their impact on commission earned. Customer onboarding to OnyxPay commencing in Q4 2026 across a phased migration, with access and features expanding in subsequent rollout phases.
“Because we work with both hotels and travel agencies, we can bring together insight from both sides of the commission relationship and turn payment data into something more actionable,” says Wagner. “We are expanding connectivity options so suppliers and their technology partners can send data more frequently, up to daily, and support payment after a stay. We are also defaulting supplier funding to direct debit to help accelerate payment.”
Streamline Payments
SurePay consolidates hotel commission payments and provides online reporting, making it easier for agencies to manage incoming payments efficiently. By connecting payment data with the booking and stay data behind it gives agencies even more useful context around what has been paid, what is still unresolved, and where delays happen repeatedly, Wagner tells us.
