United Airlines’ App Will Now Warn You if You’re In a Middle Seat

Getting out of the middle seat just got easier on United Airlines.

A new feature on the United Airlines mobile app will warn you if you are in a middle seat and a better seat opens up prior to your flight, giving you the ability to change your seat prior to boarding.

As long as you act fast, you’ll be able to get out of that dreaded middle seat if you’re using the latest version of the United app (version 4.1.36), released earlier this week.

“If you’re in a middle seat and should there be a better seat available, we’ll send you a push notification giving you a heads up!” United says on the update.

There will no doubt be competition for those open seats, so it’s best to be logged in and pay attention to your push notifications should you want to get to an aisle or window seat.

TMR has reached out to United to see if there are any more details on the capability, which is just one in a string of extra features that United has added to improve its customer service this year

In November, United updated its Travel-ready Center to include the ability to apply COVID-19 documentation to specific flight segments should you have segments with different requirements.

It also recently added a Trip Planner feature that gives groups traveling together, whether they are family or friends, the ability to coordinate what works best for the whole group, whether its destination or flights.

And, also this week, along with the middle seat update, United also enabled passcode login when getting onto the app, allowing you to avoid pulling your face mask down to use Face ID.
