British Airways Cuts Another 10,000 Heathrow Flights
by Daniel McCarthy /British Airways is making another big round of cuts to its 2022 and 2023 schedules.
The carrier announced on Monday that it was dropping another 10,000 flights to and from Heathrow that were originally scheduled between October 2022 and March 2023. That is in addition to another 600 flights, about a dozen per day scheduled through the end of October, which British Airways also canceled on Monday.
The goal with the cancellations, British Airways said, was to protect travel to some popular short-haul holiday destinations out of London in the “half-term.” Most of the cancellations have daily service to the same destinations and those on the canceled flights will be offered either an alternative flight or a refund.
Even with a lack of disruption expected, Monday’s announcement is further evidence of just how much farther the travel ecosystem has to go coming out of COVID-19.
The goal with the schedule cut on Monday and previous ones from British Airways, is the hope that it will help minimize traveler disruptions over the coming months. The carrier, like just about every other airline operating in Europe, has been struggling amidst an increasingly chaotic travel environment since the demand snap-back earlier this year.
It had previously cut 10,000 mostly short-haul routes in and out of London airports scheduled for August through October and then suspended sales of other short-haul flights from Heathrow for one week.
