Air Transat To Add Baggage, Carry-On Fees On Cheapest Fares

Air Transat To Add Baggage, Carry-On Fees On Cheapest Fares

Flair has partnered with Apple to speed baggage recovery.

Beginning on Tuesday, Air Transat will no longer offer free carry-on baggage on its cheapest fares for some flights. The carrier is following the lead of other Canadian airlines including Air Canada and WestJet.

The new baggage rules apply to flights to and from South America (with the exception of Peru), the U.S., and on domestic flights within Canada. They do not apply to flights to and from Europe or Morocco, or to flights purchased with a vacation package.

As of February 11, travellers using Eco Budget, the lowest fare option, will only be allowed to bring a personal item, such as a purse or small backpack, to their seat. All other baggage will be subject to fees and will have to be checked.

Fees will vary depending on the destination and number of checked bags. The first bag will cost between $35 and $50, plus taxes, if applicable — and a second bag will cost between $55 and $83 before any taxes.

Air Transat is also ending one free checked item for its Eco Standard fare class, its second lowest fare option, for the same destinations.

“These changes are intended to offer more competitive base fares, align with current industry practices, and allow travellers to pay only for the services they truly need,” TS said in a statement.
