Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) will effectively shut down for a significant portion of the July 4th holiday weekend due to scheduled airspace closures.
No flights will take off or land at Reagan after 12:00 p.m. on July 4, and terminal services will be limited until operations resume the following day. Flight operations will also be suspended for several hours in the early afternoon on July 3 to accommodate rehearsals for Independence Day events, which include military flyovers, fireworks, and parachute jumps.
While many airlines have already alerted passengers to schedule changes, airport officials are still advising anyone traveling over the holiday weekend to check their flight status before heading to the airport.
Even if flights are listed as on schedule, travelers should brace for potential disruptions.
“DCA flights may be delayed by temporary holds as coordinated through air traffic control communications. Weather also could impact flights during this time,” the airport noted in an advisory.
While Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) handles a higher volume of total passengers (approximately 29 million annually compared to Reagan’s 24.9 million), Reagan typically schedules more daily departures, averaging roughly 400 flights per day compared to Dulles’s 340. Reagan primarily serves smaller, narrow-body aircraft flying regional and domestic routes.
Reagan, as opposed to Dulles, which is 26 miles west in Virginia, sits right across the Potomac River, just a few miles from the National Mall. Its standard departure and arrival flight paths cut directly through the airspace being carved out for the July 4th celebrations.
