Severe summer weather caused havoc on the east coast of the United States on Monday afternoon, forcing ground stops at airports and disrupting plans for thousands of travelers.

According to the FAA, ground stops were issued at some of the country’s most popular airports on Monday afternoon, including Atlanta Hartsfield, Baltimore/Washington International., Ronald Reagan International in D.C., Denver International, Newark Liberty International, JFK International, LaGuardia, Philadelphia, and more.

“The FAA is re-routing aircraft around the storms heading to the East Coast as much as possible. Soon we will likely have to pause departures in and out of East Coast airports including NYC, Philly, DC, Charlotte, and Atlanta,” the FAA said in a message on Monday afternoon.

As of 6 p.m. EST, those ground stops amounted to more than 1,300 cancellations and another 6,400 or so delays in the U.S., according to FlightAware.

With the disruptions came travel waivers for a few U.S. airlines including United and JetBlue.

JetBlue’s waiver included all travel on Monday through impacted airports (those with ground stops issued by the FAA). Flyers with a ticket on Monday could rebook their flight for travel through Thursday, Aug. 10.

United’s waiver included the same, along with Allentown, Wilkes Barre/Scranton, Charlottesville, Harrisburg, and Richmond. Just like JetBlue, United was allowing tickets to be changed for travel through Thursday, Aug. 10.
