First Look at the New International Terminal at New York’s JFK Airport

Travelers are getting their first glimpse at the new international-only terminal at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) that will open in 2026.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey today released the first renderings of what travelers can expect at The New Terminal One, which is part of the $19 billion transformation of JFK that also includes the $1.5 billion expansion of Terminal 4 that is now under construction and a $400 million revamp of Terminal 8 that was substantially completed in November 2022.

When the new international terminal opens, it will be the largest one at JFK, taking the space of Terminal 1, the shuttered closed Terminal 2, and the former Terminal 3. For comparison, it will be nearly the same size as both of LaGuardia’s terminals combined.

The New Terminal One will feature 23 gates, more than 300,000 square feet of retail, dining, and lounge space, and a total footprint of 2.4 million sq. ft. It will open in 2026, but travelers can expect ongoing construction during that initial opening.

The goal of the terminal, and the other developments at the airport, is to transform JFK “into the world-class airport that New Yorkers deserve,” the Port Authority said. Plans call for the terminal to have “expansive, naturally lit public spaces, cutting-edge technology, and an array of amenities.”

Aside from that, not much has yet to be revealed about the specifics of what the new terminal will offer for customer experiences

“Visitors from around the world will be energized from the moment they enter the New Terminal One at JFK thanks to the locally inspired shops and restaurants that will reflect the diverse tastes and styles from across our region,” said Port Authority Chairman Kevin O’Toole. “Just as we have done at Newark’s Terminal A, we are drawing on the talents of local businesses, artisans, and restauranteurs to create memorable and award-winning new airports.”
