Storms Trigger Mounting Flight Delays, Cancellations at Major Hubs Across the U.S.

Bad weather across the U.S. is causing headaches for travelers Monday morning, as overnight thunderstorms, and storms forecast through Monday, cause flight delays and cancellations to pile up.

According to flight-tracking website FlightAware, close to 1,000 flights within, into, or out of the U.S. had been delayed as of 7:30 a.m. EDT Monday, with another 800 canceled.

William P. Hobby Airport and George Bush Intercontinental Airport, both in Houston, were placed under FAA ground stops Monday morning due to thunderstorms.

Meanwhile, overnight severe weather in the New York metropolitan area is causing bottlenecks at LaGuardia Airport and John F. Kennedy International Airport. The resulting delays prompted Delta Air Lines to issue a travel waiver for June 15 for travelers flying through those hubs. Delta had racked up 177 cancellations by Monday morning, while its regional affiliate, Endeavor Air, trailed close behind with 44.

Those bottlenecks are also impacting Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, where delays and cancellations are mounting. Travelers are facing higher-than-normal delays at Newark Liberty International Airport, Boston Logan International Airport, Philadelphia International Airport, and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.

For the rest of Monday, the FAA is forecasting further disruptions. Ground stops or delay programs are possible for Texas hubs, including Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, Dallas Love Field, Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, and both Houston airports. A afternoon ground stop is also probable for San Francisco International Airport.

The FAA notes that weather-related ground stops are also possible later tonight across major Florida destinations, including Orlando International Airport, Tampa International Airport, Miami International Airport, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, and Palm Beach International Airport.
