All flights at Milan Bergamo Airport have been suspended this morning following a “runway incident” that reportedly was someone on the tarmac getting sucked into an airport engine.
The Associated Press (AP) reports the “Bergamo Milan airport authority, known as SACBO, said all flights were suspended at the Bergamo-Orio al Serio airport at 10:20 a.m. local time “due to a problem that occurred on the taxiway.” An investigation was underway.”
It was local media outlet Corriere della Sera who cited unnamed airport officials saying someone had run onto the tarmac as a plane was taking off and got sucked into the engine.
According to Wikipedia, the airport is the third-busiest international airport in Italy, serving almost 17,4 million passengers in 2024 and is one of Ryanair‘s three largest operating bases. The airport is located in Orio al Serio, southeast of Bergamo and 45 km northeast of Milan. Together with Milan Malpensa Airport and Milan Linate Airport, it forms the Milan airport system serving the Milan metropolitan area, that with 56.9 million passengers in 2024 constitutes the largest airport system in Italy by number of passengers.
This is a developing story.
