Porter Adds Temporary Fuel Surcharge on All VIPorter Flight Redemption Bookings
by Bruce Parkinson
Porter is imposing a fuel surcharge on VIPorter flight redemption bookings.
Citing the steep rise in global fuel prices, Porter has announced a temporary fuel surcharge on all VIPorter flight redemption bookings, effective immediately.
The fee will be applied as a ‘Peak Surcharge‘ to each passenger, each way. Porter says this surcharge will allow it to maintain the same number of points required for redemption.
In a statement to VIPorter members, the airline said it expects to revert to standard pricing as oil prices stabilize and normalize. There was no definition of the metrics that would spur the reversion, however.
“We want to be transparent about why this change is necessary. Fuel represents the highest cost of airline operations and this surcharge allows us to maintain the number of points required for redemption.”
The communication to members does not quantify the amount of the surcharge. But we can get an idea through booking searches.
It appears that at present, domestic, trans-border, and sun destination routes are currently subject to a $40 per segment ‘Peak Surcharge,’ while international itineraries to destinations in the Caribbean, Mexico, and Costa Rica incur an $86 fee per passenger each-way.
