An early-morning outage at Amazon Web Services (AWS), one of the world’s largest cloud-computing providers, is causing disruptions for some passengers flying Monday morning.
Passengers from both United Airlines and Delta Air Lines were unable to access their apps earlier Monday, and others had issues checking in on their websites, problems that corrected themselves as AWS service was restored later in the morning.
Monday was far from a repeat of the 2024 Crowdstrike outage, the last major widespread tech outage. That outage slammed air travel schedules, forcing cancellations of close to 4% of global flights, and causing long-lasting effects for Delta Air Lines, in particular.
FlightAware was not showing any major delays or cancellations due to the outage, but travelers were reporting issues on social media, including some flights delayed because pilots were unable to access flight plans.
“Our teams are aware of the issue and are working to resolve it,” United wrote to passengers Monday morning. The airline advised travelers, “We are currently experiencing a technology outage. Please check in at the airport if you are not able to access this in your app.”
