Dominican Republic, Catalina Island.
When Canadians think of the Dominican Republic, the names Punta Cana and Puerto Plata often come to mind first. But there’s another side to this popular Caribbean destination that’s ready for its moment in the spotlight.
Welcome to La Romana, a captivating destination on the Dominican Republic’s southeastern coast, where pristine beaches, rich culture, natural wonders and luxurious experiences come together. And beginning in November 2026, MSC Cruises will give travellers a new reason to discover it.
With the launch of year-round sailings aboard MSC Opera, La Romana becomes MSC Cruises’ newest Caribbean homeport, opening the door to exciting Southern Caribbean adventures.

A Destination Worth Discovering
While La Romana may be less familiar to many Canadian travellers, it offers plenty to explore.
The region is home to the renowned Casa de Campo Resort & Villas, a luxury retreat known for its championship golf courses and upscale amenities. Nearby, Altos de Chavón transports visitors to another time with its cobblestone streets, artisan workshops and striking Mediterranean-style architecture overlooking the Chavón River.
Nature lovers can discover the Cave of Wonders, with its fascinating rock formations and ancient Taíno pictographs, while the spectacular beaches and turquoise waters of nearby Saona and Catalina islands offer classic Caribbean beauty.
For travellers seeking authentic Dominican experiences, the region’s cuisine, music, local markets and welcoming communities provide opportunities to connect with the destination beyond the beach.
It’s this combination of relaxation, discovery and culture that makes La Romana such an appealing starting point for a Caribbean cruise.

A New Way to Explore the Southern Caribbean
MSC Cruises will begin weekly departures from La Romana in November, marking the first time the cruise line has offered year-round sailings in the Southern Caribbean.
Aboard MSC Opera, guests can choose seven-night itineraries or extend their vacation with a back-to-back, 14-night “butterfly” cruise, combining two consecutive voyages for an even more extensive Caribbean experience. Southern Caribbean ports calls include Barbados, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Tortola, Antigua and St. Maarten – many of which will be new to cruises who have only travelled in the eastern or western Caribbean.
The new program also creates an opportunity for travellers to spend time exploring La Romana before or after their cruise, combining a land-based Dominican Republic vacation with the pleasures of cruising.
And every MSC Opera sailing from La Romana will feature a visit to an exciting new beach destination.

Introducing Catalina Sugar Beach
Just offshore from La Romana, Catalina Island is preparing to welcome guests to the newly enhanced Catalina Sugar Beach experience, scheduled to open in November 2026.
Developed in partnership with CTL Maritime and Casa de Campo Resort & Villas, Catalina Sugar Beach celebrates the natural beauty of this protected island while introducing elevated amenities and experiences.
Guests can relax on white-sand beaches, swim in crystal-clear waters or enjoy a leisurely meal at an open-air buffet pavilion serving international favourites and local specialties.
Two bars, including a tropical palapa-style bar overlooking the ocean, will offer refreshing drinks and inviting places to unwind. Comfortable daybeds and private cabanas will be available for rent, while a water sports centre will provide equipment for exploring the surrounding waters.
For those who prefer discovery to lounging, a picturesque walking trail will wind through lush vegetation to a scenic viewpoint, with educational signage highlighting the island’s diverse tree species.
Shore excursions will offer even more ways to explore, from catamaran outings and snorkelling among colourful marine life to visits to nearby attractions.
