Dominican Republic Extends 6-Month Passport Eligibility Exemption Through 2026
by Bruce Parkinson
The Dominican Republic has once again extended a temporary exemption to the country’s general rule that a passport must be valid for at least six months following date of entry.
Implemented in June 1, 2024, the “exceptional measure” states that citizens of Canada, the European Union, England, U.S., Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Colombia and Ecuador, who enter the Dominican Republic exclusively for tourist purposes, are authorized to do so with their valid and in force passports.
In a press statement, the Dominican Republic Tourism Promotion Office states:

“Please keep in mind that the general rule specifies that (passport) validity must be for 6 months, however there is a special rule for travellers from Canada that allowed them to travel for tourism purposes, with a valid passport, during their stay. This rule has been extended until December 31, 2026.”
While this may be good news for emergency situations, travel advisor clients should be made aware that travelling with a passport with less than six month of validity remaining is simply not a good idea.
